What Yoga Can Teach Us About love

Bevan and I recently celebrated our wedding in the heart of Bali, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the love of our closest friends and family. It was a profound experience, not just of joy and celebration, but of reflection on the deeper meaning of love and commitment—something we both hold close as yoga practitioners and therapists.

At its core, marriage, like yoga, is a practice. In one of the vows we shared, we spoke of embodying love, of returning to that anchor in our hearts, again and again, no matter what challenges arise. This resonates deeply with the teachings of yoga: love is not just a feeling, but a continuous, conscious act of showing up—for ourselves, for each other, and for the journey we walk together.

Yoga teaches us that true love transcends the limitations of time and ego. It is in love where we begin to let go of the small self—the one driven by fear or attachment—and instead, step into a larger self connected to all beings. In marriage, we practice this unity. We learn to release the need to possess or complete the other, realizing instead that love is about witnessing each other's growth, holding space for each other’s imperfections, and honoring the divine essence that lives within both of us.

In Sanskrit, the word "Yoga" means union. This union is not about becoming one person or losing our individuality, but about walking alongside each other, hand in hand, as we each unfold into our truest selves. It is about creating a sacred space where both partners can evolve, and where love itself becomes the greatest teacher—a path of deepening intimacy, trust, and self-awareness.

As we move forward into this new chapter, I invite you to reflect on your own relationships—romantic or otherwise—and ask: How can I practice love as a daily commitment, a practice of returning to the heart space? How can I see the divine in the other, and in myself?

We look forward to continuing to share this journey with you all, both on the mat and beyond.
